| Interpreter insights
With more than 20 years of experience as a conference and consultant interpreter, and offering particular expertise in medical conferences, Calliope’s Lívia Cais is perfectly placed to provide interpretation for your event in vibrant Brazil.
Calliope-Interpreters is proud to introduce its new representative for Brazil, Lívia Cais. Lívia, who is based in Rio de Janeiro, has more than 20 years of experience as a conference and consultant interpreter, as well as a translator, and is accredited as a certified interpreter and translator. As a consultant interpreter, she supplies interpretation services for events both large and small across a range of sectors in the Brazilian private market, and has particular expertise in the medical field.
Lívia comments, “For many years, Heloísa M. Costa provided high-quality interpretation and consultancy services in the Brazilian market as Calliope’s representative in this country. I am truly honoured and excited to take over the baton from her and collaborate with experienced and first-class colleagues from around the world. In today’s Brazilian market, more than ever before, quality interpretation solutions are paramount.”
Calliope Brazil at your service
While it is the only Portuguese-speaking country in Latin America, Brazil is also the region’s largest country and home to almost half of the continent’s population.
Brazil is now firmly on the map as a global conference venue, having recently hosted major political and sporting events such as Rio+20, the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games. Boasting a range of conference venues and hotels, as well as recently improved urban transportation systems, Brazil is an attractive venue for multilingual meetings and conferences.
The most frequently requested languages are English and Portuguese, followed by Spanish and other Romance languages. German, Korean, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese are in less demand, and there are consequently fewer local interpreters available. Demand for Sign Language interpretation is on the rise, now that it is a legal requirement to provide it in public institutions and at official public events in the country.
They say that in Brazil the year only really starts after Carnival. Avoid the summer crowds and choose the months between March and early December for your event.
Medical conferences a speciality
Lívia specialises in organising interpretation for medical conferences. Brazil is an important medical centre in Latin America and worldwide, with renowned universities, first-class medical professionals and innovative surgeons, whose expertise is acknowledged the world over. It therefore attracts a large number of international events requiring high-level and specialised medical interpretation services.
It is important to note that the interpretation of medical courses and events should not be confused with community medical interpreting. While the latter is very common in the United States, in Brazil it is the preserve of volunteers.
The professional interpretation of medical conferences and events, on the other hand, requires a great deal of dedication, study and specialised background knowledge. The interpreting team must be selected with great care, taking into account each interpreter’s personal experience and the event’s medical specialty. Lívia’s many years as a consultant interpreter in the medical sector enable her to provide the highest quality interpretation for medical conferences.
If you are considering Brazil as the venue for your next meeting don’t hesitate to contact Lívia Cais, Calliope’s new representative in Brazil. She will be delighted to help you.
