Founded in 1953, the International
Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) is the interpreting
profession's only worldwide organisation and has over 2,500
members in 70 countries.
- AIIC membership criteria
are very strict.
- AIIC negotiates agreements
on behalf of the profession, e.g. agreements with international
organisations such as the UN, European institutions, etc. stipulating
working conditions and terms of employment.
- AIIC sets a certain number
of professional standards.
- AIIC is involved in the drafting and updating of ISO standards
relating to in-built and mobile interpreting booths.
- Along with UNESCO and WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation),
AIIC is currently involved in defining copyright
and continues to work on recognition of the professional title
of Conference Interpreter.
